Garden Club

Growing Happy Kids with Healthy Habits

Berryton Garden Club meets after school during the fall and spring planting/growing seasons. Our clubs consist of 35 students and several adult volunteers. It’s an excellent way for children to learn about plants and their life cycles, the benefits of eating fresh foods, patience, hard work and dedication, team work, and developing healthy habits. Students experience a mini-lesson on the types of fruits, vegetables, and herbs we grow in our garden and what are the needs of the plants. We spend most of our hour after school working in the garden: planting, weeding, harvesting, and so much more. Most importantly, we sample our produce!

We’d like to thank the teachers, Berryton families, Berryton Kiwanis, Farm Bureau, the Weaver family, Premiere Farm and Home, Tarwater’s, WestStar Energy (donation to our shed), Heartland Tree Service and others who have graciously given to our garden.

Berryton students sowing healthy habits in school garden

BERRYTON, Kan. -- Students at Berryton Elementary School will be coming to school all summer. Members of the newly founded Garden Club will volunteer throughout their summer vacation to tend the fruits and vegetables growing on school property. The final two Garden Club meetings of the school year will be from 4-5 p.m. Thursday and Tuesday on the west side of the school's playground at 69th and Berryton. The Garden Club was founded to foster healthy children by encouraging outdoor exercise and healthy eating habits. The Club already has planted an assortment of healthy foods, including strawberries, spinach, potatoes, peas, beans, lettuce, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, melons, tomatoes, onions, and peppers. The Garden Club, which has about 60 members from kindergarten through sixth grade, was established in March under the direction of Rick Martin, who also helped start two similar projects in Lawrence. The club's sponsors include fourth-grade teacher Laura Hurla, parent volunteer Kayla Moss and para-professional Sally Buckland. The club and sponsors receive assistance from many parents, staff and community members. Donations from local businesses PLS Landscaping, Premiere Farm & Home, and Tarwater Farm & Home Supply provided many of the necessary supplies, seeds and tools. The Berryton Kiwanis and Shawnee County Farm Bureau also have provided support for the project. For additional information, please contact Laura Hurla at 785-861-1300 or at 785-341-3234.

We have several intramural sports at Berryton.  Mrs. Dishman and Mrs. Basye are the coaches.

In the fall we have a "combo" sports session and volleyball.  Basketball is in the winter, and track is in the spring.  Each sport has 12 practice sessions.  At the end of volleyball there is a round-robin tournament that parents are welcome to attend, and at the end of the basketball season, there is a PTO-sponsored tournament called Buffalo Classic. There is also a district-wide Elementary Track Meet at the end of the track season, which is held at SHHS.

The cost for the intramural program is a one time $25.00 fee for the entire school year, whether you play one of the sports or all of the sports.  If a student participates in track, there will be an additional $10.00 charge for a track shirt that will be worn and is pre-ordered. NO LATE ORDERS.

Intramural practice dates are subject to change.  Please be sure to watch backpack mail for permission slips.
